Productivity Habits

Time is the most precious resource, as you may have already read in Time to Make Time. I listed 7 things you can do to make 20% of your time yield 80% of your desired results. Aside from being self-disciplined enough to stay away from distractions, success in spending your time efficiently comes from planning; organizing and prioritizing. Come to think of it, that is easier said than done.

To increase your productivity and become a high performer, think about how your time is best spent. Accept that you won't have time for everything, and give your time value. Pick a few things (let's say 2 maybe 3) you can commit to each day, and leave everything else on the back burner.

The goal is not to find a way to constantly be busy. Busy is not the same as being productive. The different between busy and productive people is the results. If your time spent is yielding mostly results, then that is being productive as opposed to simply busy. How you spend your time is your choice and under your control. Don't forget to take breaks to recharge and schedule some time off. All work and no rest is actually counterproductive. (Stacey Alcorn - Busy is the Enemy of Productive)

First and foremost, learn to say NO! Knowing when to say 'yes' and 'no' at the right time is not always easy. The trick is to go with your gut; when you feel good about your answer, then you've made the right choice. There are many positive effects of saying 'no' like setting boundaries and creating more room for things you say 'yes' to. (Matthew Toren - Say 'NO' to These 5 Things for an Immediate Life Improvement)

After you figure out when to say 'yes' and 'no' start thinking about your habits. Humans are driven by nature to seek daily routines in life. Routines are predictable, and predictable means safe. Habits are important because define us, we are creatures of habit. Luckily they are not written in our DNA, they can be changed and replaced with intended effort.

Habits are grounded in consistency. They are several repeated instances over time. You perform an action, go about your business, then perform that specific action again, and soon enough that action begins to stick. If you haven't already developed a system of positive habits to incorporate in your daily routine and are instead stuck in a loop of bad ones, fear not! that can be changed.

Upgrading to positive habits are hard, but they are always worth it. Once you handle the up-front work required and keep up with them consistently, they will become automatic and happen more naturally. A good strategy is to start small. Don't try to change up your entire regular routine all at once disrupting it with 10 different positive habits. Take one day or one aspect of what you want to do, and consistently do it for a week or two. Don't break the chain of the initial habit forming process. After successfully doing it consistently, increase the increments over time. Eventually it will become automatic and harder to break once you are in the habit of doing it.

The same goes for breaking bad habits, it is a challenge. The first step is to break it down into smaller parts instead of quitting all at once. Reduce the frequency or intensity of your bad habit slowly and avoid breaking the chain of consistency in this process. Keep following your outlined plan until it becomes automatic to you. An alternative way to break a bad habit is to completely replace it with a good one. Start small and slowly introduce the new positive habit. Consistency can make anything possible.
